Postcards: Christianshavn (DK)

A short walk from Slotsholmen via Knippelsbro took us across to Christianshavn, a neighbourhood laced with canals and cobblestoned streets. For an area considered part of the city centre of a capital city, it has all the charm of the countryside by the sea. It oozes an unique vibe of cosyness, perhaps reflecting the philosphy of hygge that the Danes subscribe to. Or maybe it’s the waft of herbal joints from the freetown Christiania?

We not only walked around Christianshavn but we extended it to the seafront of Amagebro, admiring the concept of leisure space in Islands Brygge by the presence of public pools and water polo enclosures directly in the sea. F dipped his toes in and declared the water a very chilly 14°C. Rather unsurprising for early May in the Scandinavia, no?

What cracked me up was the concept of “pacifier-lock” on the pedestrian-and-cyclist-only bridge of Bryggebroen. It seems this is part of a Scandinavian tradition, a rite of passage to sacrifice the pacifiers as children grow up. In the past, clusters of pacifiers used to be tied to branches of tree, but it seems to have now taken on the lovelock twist and can be found on the bridge. I can’t decide if this is a good development or not…

Lovely day from the pics and that big fish sculpture is positively interesting :)

Totally gorgeous and the fish sculpture is definitely interesting, plus sobering reminder of how much rubbish there are in the sea…

This town looks delightful! I must go visit Denmark someday :)

Regarding the pacifiers, I can’t imagine “dumping” plastic anywhere as good development. ;) Perhaps it is less worse that the locks though… at least symbolically! :P

It is delightful (then again we had good guide to kickstart our visit too, hehe) and yup, do visit! I’m now plotting potential trip to other parts of Scandinavia in the coming summers…

My question was more of – how many pacifiers do each child need to actually end up owning a cluster? 2 should be plenty, no?
