It’s not all about chocolate

This may sound odd but I am off chocolate. I am not entirely sure how it comes about, just that I eat a whole lot less of them (or none at all for extended period) and I am no longer tempted to buy them regularly either. On the other hand, F is chomping in chocolate on a daily basis, at just about every main meal of the day. I reckon he’s eating enough chocolate for the two of us in any case. And yes, we have a stock of chocolate tablets at home to sustain his habit (and this is just about all the chocolate I pick up nowadays).

So when Salon du Chocolat came rolling into town this week, I debated. Nearly an annual pilgrimage for me, I hemmed and hawed about going this year. I probably would have skipped it had my childhood friend not been in town and curious about this large gathering of chocolate vendors and other purveyors of sweet goodies. :)

The salon this year is bigger than ever, spread across two floors of Pavillion 5 at Porte de Versailles. The major plus side of this is the additional space between stands, providing a much needed breathing space. In the past, with more stands added from year to year, it was beginning to feel too crammed for my liking.

It therefore shouldn’t be a major surprise either that I came home with just one chocolate variety (green tea and sake ganache) and instead, I bought a lot of jams. Yes, jams. They’re meant as presents though, so not exactly for me but I did have fun tasting and selecting them.

One particular stand-out vendor named their jams after politicians! Obama is all gelée of coca-cola and cocoa, Hollande a mix of melon and sangria, Lagarde sparkles with gelée of champagne and “gold sequins” (whatever that is – likely my bad translation of paillette d’or), Sarkozy the “health nut” with berries, cherry, apple and honey, Le Pen seeps in lily of the valley, and Copé merits the flavour of hemp. I’ll let you figure out why each has been assigned the flavour profile listed. Rather clever, if you asked me.

well we do mostly eat dark chocolate (we found milk chocolate too sweet) and even then, i don’t know why the change. i have not exactly substitute it with something else either.
