Not hungry in Brest

When in Brittany, go to the crêperie. Actually, even if not in Brittany, if there is a good crêperie nearby, seriously, go. My favourite buckwheat galette is one filled with either andouille or andouillette (and we’re not talking about pork sausage here but good ol’ chitterlings!), preferably with an egg and mustard creme. This surprises quite a few people, especially concerned crêperie owners who wonder if I knew what I had ordered. They are usually happier with my sweet crêpe choice: salted butter caramel, with or without apple pieces.

One evening though, to belatedly celebrate F’s birthday, C&M took us to Hinoki. This small sushi restaurant is ran by Xavier, a Nipponophile who spent many years brushing up his skills and serves fresh catches from the region, together with his Japanese wife, Mika. There are maybe 15, 16 covers, top, when it is a full house.

Xavier doesn’t buy more each day than what he needs based on the reservation count, and that evening we learned what it was like to eat well-prepared fresh sushi and sashimi instead of run-of-the-mill, industrial scale slices of fish. It did cost a small fortune, but we were repaid with dinner of high quality.

We also discovered the local Sunday market while in Brest, which was completely chock-a-block with people, making it rather difficult to photograph the wide variety of produce that was on sale without causing a disruption. I also got a bit distracted with the siren call of fresh fruits, buying some strawberries here, cherries there, melons too. Ah, summer days… luscious, delicious, summer days…

(Sorry, hands full, so no more pictures were subsequently taken) ;)
