Postcards: Heidelberg Altstadt (DE)

Work travel recently took me to Heidelberg, a town which up to then was known to me largely because multiple research institutes are based here, including EMBO, EMBL and Max Planck Institutes. Somehow it escaped my radar as a place to visit, given the famed Heidelberg Castle and the picturesque, baroque Altstadt have made it a popular tourist destination. Whenever I did not have a meeting session to attend, I went out exploring ;)

I have to say, Heidelberg is really very charming, especially on a sunny spring day. There are cafés everywhere with terraces to sit out on and people-watch, the buildings colourful and architecturally interesting, and there’s a certain dynamic that I couldn’t quite put my fingers on. I do wonder what it’s like in the winter, although if there are snow on the hill and the castle, it could be quite a dreamy winterland. Couple that with a cuppa mulled wine, I could see the enchantment.

Hehe… not a bad idea if I have the time to do so! As it stands, I’m going to be all travelled out by the end of the year, between different work and personal trips to go on. *gulp*
