Postcards: Amed and Tulamben (ID)

There wasn’t a day in Bali that we did not go into the sea. In fact, whenever possible, we squeezed in two sessions in the water – once in the morning, and another in the evening. I usually paddled by the beach, although I did once go out snorkelling with F, the veritable water baby.

Amed was therefore the perfect base for us while exploring East Bali, and we also nipped over Tulamben, which is popular among divers, for a couple of hours to snorkel. These sleepy towns were exactly what we were looking for – calm and peace from large tourist groups and urban traffic. Don’t get me wrong, there are other visitors around, but unlike Kuta or Ubud, we did not feel like there were more foreigners than locals in Amed.

We often had the beaches to ourselves (or shared with a handful other couples), free from pedlars who try to sell all sort of things we don’t need (not something you can say in Kuta or Jimbaran), and we were surrounded by paddy fields, domestic farms, lushful green hills and clear blue sea. We walked in the dark to search for local eateries (there was no street lighting so thank goodness we brought headlamps with us), had tasty Balinese dinners for less than €10 in total each time, and didn’t even worry if the internet connection was available and/or efficient.

We were a little sad to leave after such a brief stay but our schedule did not permit any kind of extension. Moreover, other adventures awaited and to not sample more of what East Bali has to offer – albeit at a leasurely pace – would be a crying shame too. The eternal dilemma of the push and pull in travel…

Mount agung looking good ;) and that snorkel photo….morning of evening?!?

seems like a nice place…what was the hotel that u stayed at in Amed?

    • Lil says:

Gunung Agung is very prominent! That photo was taken in one of the evenings :)

We stayed in two different places in Amed. The first night we were at Geria Giri Shanti, which is very well run and conscious of their environmental footprints. The first two photos were taken at the beach a couple of minutes walk from there.

On the second night, as my birthday treat, we splurged a little and stayed at Arya Amed in one of their private bungalows. A far cry from our usual value-for-budget lodgings!

    • Lil says:

well it wasn’t that dark yet. by the time we were done, it was still a good hour before night, so that wasn’t too bad :)
