Postcards: Quiberon (FR)

What a glorious day it was, when we drove our way down to Quiberon. A former island in the Atlantic ocean until the 11th century, when formation of a tombolo changed its landscape and connected the island to the mainland, creating a peninsula with an isthmus that sports a width of mere 22m at its narrowest point.

The key to truly enjoy the coastal front of the Côte Sauvage is to avoid the chock-a-block main road, particularly during the summer holiday season, that goes through St-Pierre-Quiberon down to Quiberon. Instead, on passing the tombolo and immediately on arrival of the former island, take a right turn in the direction of Portivy. From there, it’s a straight drive along the coast. Better still, park the car and take a long, invigorating walk while admiring the wild coast which sees waves after waves crashing in.

For a calmer spot to swim in, the beach of Quiberon in the south itself is a good option, among many others. The bonus point here is the bustling village of Quiberon where one could easily grab an ice cream or two, along with some snacks and picnic goodies, before settling on a comfortable rug by the sea. Pretty sweet, right?

Our visit to Quiberon Peninsula ended with a dinner at a local creperie in Portivy. We debated our option between this good old Breton specialty, or to savour some fresh sea food. Alas, the decision was out of our hand when we found the seafood restaurant packed to the gill and we were not particularly keen to wait for another hour to sate our grumbling stomach. There’s something to the good old coastal walk that got us all hungry and wanting to be fed quickly. ;)

    Love the “flying” fish :)
And now I want to go to Quiberon… /sigh :P

    • Lil says:

You should! Go in the summer though… I certainly would love to revisit the area in the summer, and explore a bit more of parts that I still have not seen. Brittany is awesome :D

  2. med says:

Just came back from langkawi too but it was a training that was pretty packed to the brim…only went to the beach and pool once!!! ;)

  3. med says:

Its not clear blue but it wasn’t dirty hehehe ;)

    • Lil says:

Yeah, such a shame the water on the west coast is not clear in general. That’s how I remember Langkawi, along with the numerous ogling men (who were not-so-secretly trying to photograph/videotape) that really made my friends and I rather uncomfortable.
