Postcards: Locmariaquer and La Roche Bernard (FR)

Our few days of roaming around Morbihan came quickly to a close, and we found ourselves driving back to my in-laws to drop their car back (they had kindly lent us one for the trip). En route, we made a couple more quick stops, in the small towns of Locmariaquer and La Roche Bernard.

Locmariaquer is well-known for the largest menhir to be erected but sadly this broken menhir of Er Grah now lies on the ground in four pieces, adjacent to a famous dolmen, Table des Marchands. We debated visiting the site but given the lacklustre guided tour that morning at Carnac, my fellow road-trippers were less enthusiastic about it. Instead, we wandered around the port area for a little bit, had a very late lunch, and set off again.

La Roche Bernard was a former fortified Viking settlement on River Vilaine but today flourished as a yachting port, evident by the hundreds of private vessels docked at the marina. The expansion in the region can also be seen through the presence of the defunct old bridge of which only the anchoring remnants remain, and the modern and newer bridge nearby to replace it.

We went for a walk down the dirt path along the cliffside that took us to the river, but couldn’t really went further as there were fences marking boundary of private properties. It seemed we had mistaken the path for another that we had intended to take, which would have run along most of the river and also passes the village. Ah, the problem of miscommunication…

L'Armoricaine

We couldn’t really spare more time to search for the actual path, given we have a cake (l’Armoricaine!) to collect in St Nazaire before 7pm or we would be going without dessert for dinner that evening. You know me, the priority for a cake – not just any cake but that of regional specialty – trumps the one for a countryside walk! Off we bundled back into the car and hurtled down D47 in order to meet the delicious deadline :D
