Mori Yoshida
Mori Yoshida came up on my radar earlier this year, when I was researching this year’s crop of galette des rois but didn’t quite make the cut (it was a tough decision!). Its location is really not far from where we live, yet somehow I am only stepping into its door recently. With friends are coming over for dinner, I wanted to share some treats with them, plus I feel less guilty about picking up 5-6 different items in one go ;)
Helmed by a young Japanese pastry chef which gave its shop his name, its sleek interior the image of perfect Japanese minimalism, its space clean and airy, and of course, its display shelves hunger-provoking. I admit, I walked in with some expectation of Japanese flavours (think matcha, yuzu, azuki) in his pastries but lo and behold, French classics and fruity creations reign the day.
With dinner guests in mind, I selected a handful of items that would be shared instead of a larger cake to be sliced: “Beige”, which highlights chocolate, praliné feuilleté, orange ganache, and Darjeeling and lime cream; “Tarte au Citron”, a somewhat acidic take of the French classic lemon tarte; “Érable Caramélisé”, a perfect marriage of maple syrup and hazelnut which was everyone’s favourite that evening; “Marron Glacé”, a wobbly, tall, square cake featuring candied chestnuts; and “Tarte au Figue”, flaky puff pastry with glazed figs.
If you are wondering where are the photos of the wonderful individual cakes and tarts that I’ve brought home… well, after a careful walk home to ensure everything survived the journey, just as I was putting the box into the fridge, I tripped and the box slid right out from my hand. Luckily(?) it did not land on the floor but the top of the fridge which stands at about the height of my waist. Most items were slightly bruised so still reasonable to serve but no longer picture-pretty, except for marron glacé which was completely squished. Gah…!
I consoled myself by stuffing my face with the deformed cake, of course ;)
hahaha…very selfish of u to have the whole cake by urself…likely the trip was intentional ;)
