Fondation Louis Vuitton

When you are wealthy and could dictate the kind of legacy that will bear your (brand) name, why not hire Frank Gehry to build a museum with unique vessel-like architecture in the splendid setting of the Bois de Boulogne?

Fondation Louis Vuitton, opened with great fanfare and ticket giveaways last weekend, will house art works from Bernard Arnault’s personal collection as well as those owned by the LVMH group. In return for the permission to erect this monumental building, its ownership will be transferred to the city of Paris in 55 years.

Many of the art pieces and installations are very modern and conceptualised beyond my comprehension. One day, modern art, one day, maybe you and I can come to an understanding. One day… An entire room was also dedicated to displaying various models of this building from its conception to completion, while on a lower floor, an exhibition devoted to the men and women who were involved in its construction.

The bonus to this visit comes in the form of the superb view of Paris from the “top deck of the ship”. The autumn colours shone through and for once I got to see the scale of the Bois de Boulogne itself. La Defense is prominently in the horizon, while the proud Iron Lady was rather hidden between a narrow opening of two white walls. It was already oh so pretty on a grim and grey day, imagine if it had been a clear sunny day…

ça doit être intéressant de comprendre le concept d’une telle structure! Qu’est-ce que Franck Gehry a voulu montrer avec ce navire déconstruit?
